It was a great experience to participate in the Strategy Consulting Boot camp. Professor Wadhwa was an engaging speaker and brought a lot of energy to the class. We particularly enjoyed the interactive nature of class with role plays and group projects. I had a chance to speak with students after the program, and they thought the Bootcamp was a perfect complement to the strategy classes offered at Harvard.
The students at Fuqua found this program to be phenomenally useful. We learned skills that will help us with recruiting and in our future jobs. We will definitely host this Bootcamp at Fuqua again next year.
Strategy Consulting Skills class with Professor Wadhwa was one of my favorite classes at Columbia. Not only did Professor Wadhwa teach us the important tools I need in my job today, but he did it with so much enthusiasm and energy that he motivated us all. I fully recommend this class and Professor Wadhwa.
What Prof Wadhwa actually provides is a set of tools for handling any business problem whatsoever, no matter the function, no matter the industry. The principles apply to much more than to consulting. I've begun using these tools to organize my club activities and my job search. I highly recommend Hitendra Wadhwa's bootcamp to my fellow B-school students.
I took the class to understand the job, mindset and process of being a consultant. I have actually referred to the class slides numerous times for everything from interviewing for a consulting job to on-the-job work. This class was one of the most helpful that I took at school - and very entertaining as well!
The class provided me with a set of very practical tools to enhance my experience and simplify my life as a consultant. It focused more on the way consultants think, go about solving problems and deal with clients, than it did on canned frameworks.
The tips, tricks and frameworks that this class teaches are invaluable for just about any career, not exclusively strategy consulting. However, I found even greater value in Prof. Wadhwa's digressions where he shared his practical approaches to problem solving from his business experience.
In Strategy Consulting Skills we put frameworks into practice, learned how to manage client expectations, and began to think critically about problem solving in a context very specific to what consulting firms (and Fortune 500 clients) demand. I use those same skills in my job today.
I think one of the key strengths of the class is the emphasis on logical progressions in problem solving. Rather than counting on our individual brilliance to intuit the optimal solution to a problem, the rigor of building and fleshing out strategy solutions is a sound and requisite practice not only for future consultants but for anyone in business and life.
Pertinent for consultants and non-consultants alike, Strategy Consulting course blends practical and theoretical approaches to project and client management. Professor Wadhwa is enlightening and funny, reminding us that there is more to life than work (egad!).
Professor Wadhwa's dynamic class sessions are geared towards practice and feedback...excellent preparation for both strategy consulting and general management.
The course gave students a unique view into consulting and he taught the skills necessary to succeed there. It highlighted the importance of understanding how every action, slide, spreadsheet impacts the client. I feel that I appreciate the course even more now that I'm putting these learnings to use.
This course provided me a jumpstart in my McKinsey career.
The greatest value I got from the course was the practical lessons that turned out to be directly relevant for my summer internship (and now my full-time job). Snippets like "how to summarize your extensive work in a short voicemail for your boss" or how to analyze an issue in a tree format. These are precisely the challenges faced by new associates at consulting firms, and I felt I had a leg up because of this class.
The course is a must if you will be pursuing a career in consulting.
I really enjoyed the Strategy Consulting Skills Master Class. However, it wasn't until the first week of my internship that I truly understood how useful as well as interesting what we had learnt really was. From day one, I was applying the thinking, skills and tools that we had covered in the class - it certainly made my internship easier and more rewarding and hopefully gives me an edge.
The course gave me a leg up in preparation for my summer internship in consulting. I felt comfortable starting my summer job and jumping right into the client project.
I found the class highly valuable even though I didn't choose a career in consulting. The approach to working with clients is valuable whether in consulting, sales, or any type of job that requires dealing with a 3rd party. Moreover, the professor was highly entertaining, making the time seem to fly by.
Even though I never planned to pursue a career in consulting, I have found the Strategy Consulting Skills course invaluable in my current job. Professor Wadhwa provides a great problem-solving framework that I have applied numerous times to my various strategy projects that I have worked on; I would recommend this class even for students not interested in pursuing a career in management consulting.
I have been able to use this class and its materials immediately in my current position. It helps me in putting frameworks on analyses and presentations and I also have been able to maneuver the organization more effectively by disciplining my questions and requests as a new employee. I have in fact brought the course notes to my desk as reference and have also implemented a Hypothesis Tree to help me sort through a recent business problem.
Consulting Skills was one of the most valuable courses I took in the Columbia MBA; and not only because I'm now working as a consultant but because I'm convinced that the fundamental skills taught there (i.e., structured problem solving, project management, communications and influence building) are essential for managers in all industries. I am sure that this course gave me a head start in my consulting career at Katzenbach Partners.
The Strategy Consulting Skills course gave me a great framework and a set of tools with which to approach all kinds of problem solving. I gained learnings that are broadly applicable in many different capacities- from consulting assignments to extracurricular activities as well as my summer internship projects. I can now approach problem solving with a structured, systematic thought process and am sure these skills will be of use many more times in the future.
I got a real taste of what consulting is all about. I learned how to create the structure and scope for a project and how to narrow in on what is most important. I also realized there were some things about consulting that weren't for me, and this was a good thing to learn as I explored various career paths. Professor Wadhwa's enthusiasm in the classroom made each session engaging and useful.
It was an amazing course for me for the ability to learn to think in the structured manner that the consulting world relies on. This does not just apply to consultants, and in fact not even just in business. I will take the manner of thinking and use it throughout life. In this case, it is not only a case of the message itself, but also the messenger. The delivery of the material by Professor Wadhwa is clear and succinct allowing for easy understanding. His insights from previous experiences add color to the examples that I may have not understood otherwise. Definitely a class worth taking!
